The Secrets Of Off-page Linking Part 2

19th October 2009

Part 2 of this article discusses your link profile.

Last week’s article introduced the concept of links. This included both natural and artificial links. Natural links are the organic result of quality website content and artificial links are the simulation of natural links from Google’s perspective. Webmasters can utilize artificial links in order to increase their Pagerank within Google and achieve a higher page listing. This was the crux of the article.

Now on to today’s topic…This article is extremely important to read and read again as you don’t want to be scratching your head 3 months down the line wondering why Google refuses to rank your website high or rank it at all.

The reason for this is that you do not have to spend weeks writing huge amounts of quality content, rather you can write this content over time knowing that your artificial links will help you obtain, and with constant attention, maintain your high page ranking in Google.

What I am going to discuss today is a few important points about the link profile to your website:
1.    Anchor text variation
2.    Growing links over time
3.    Age
4.    Destination page variation

Anchor Text Variation

What is anchor text? The anchor text is the text that lies on top of the link itself. As an example, the link will be:

The anchor text, which is what you will see on the webpage is:

Many webmasters make the mistake of creating all their artificial links to one webpage – such as the homepage of each website. An example of this would be:

If all your links are straight to the homepage, Google will see your webpage as gaining traffic artificially and will penalize you. Remember that artificial links are created to mimic natural links. As soon as you do something that does not appear natural, Google could penalize your webpage. Please be cautious when creating your artificial links.

Instead, it is mandatory to use many different anchor text variations when building your artificial links. If you have 4 links that link to a webpage, ensure that you have at least 4 sets of others to make it look natural. The other reason for this is that you definitely want to build the page rank to many different webpages and not only to your homepage. By creating many different links with different achor text, the page rank and your overall ranking should definitely increase.

Unfortunately, that is all the time I have to write this article today. The other 3 topics will be discussed next week. Until then….have a great week!
